Turnpike Way

1980s-90s housing estate convenient for the retail park and M27 access

A neighbourhood in the south-western part of Hedge End, centred on the road of the same name. The area developed primarily in the 1980s and 1990s, with housing that includes a mix of detached houses, townhouses and some flats. Turnpike Way connects Shamblehurst Lane to Tollbar Way and the retail park area, making it convenient for shopping at Marks and Spencer, Next and the other retail park stores, and for access to the M27 via Junction 7. The Turnpike pub serves the local community and provides a neighbourhood social venue. The estate is well maintained and has a suburban character similar to the rest of Hedge End, with gardens, driveways and quiet residential roads. The proximity to the retail park means that larger shops are within easy walking distance for residents on the eastern side of the area. The housing stock reflects the period of construction, with brick-built family houses in the styles of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Traffic on Turnpike Way itself can be busy as it is a connecting route, but the side streets and cul-de-sacs are quiet.
