St John's

The historic heart of Hedge End around the medieval parish church, with older housing stock

The historic core of Hedge End, centred on St John the Evangelist Church, the oldest building in the town with twelfth-century origins. St John's Road runs through this area, connecting the church to the wider town. The residential streets here include some of the older properties in Hedge End, dating from the Victorian and Edwardian periods, alongside interwar and early postwar housing. The Barleycorn pub on St John's Road is a well-known local landmark and social hub. The area has a slightly more established character than the later estates, with mature trees, hedges and gardens that give it a settled, leafy feel. The church and its churchyard provide a green space and a direct link to the area's pre-suburban past. Several of the houses in the area are among the most characterful in Hedge End, predating the mass development of the 1960s and adding variety to the streetscape. The Hedge End Medical Centre on St John's Road serves the wider community. The area sits at the junction of several routes through the town, making it well connected to the retail park, the station and the schools. Property values in the St John's area reflect the combination of character, convenience and proximity to Wildern School.
