Dowd's Farm
Modern housing development with green spaces on Hedge End's eastern edge
The newest major development area in Hedge End, situated on the eastern edge of the town on former agricultural land. The Dowd's Farm development has been built in phases from the early twenty-first century onwards, providing a mix of family houses, smaller homes and flats built to modern design and energy standards. The development includes green spaces, footpaths and cycle routes that connect the new neighbourhood to the established parts of the town. The open space at Dowd's Farm provides meadow walks with views across the surrounding countryside, and wildflowers and butterflies can be seen along the paths in summer. The area has a contemporary character quite different from the older estates, with higher-density housing, smaller gardens, more varied building heights and a more designed approach to public space and landscaping. A new primary school and community facilities have been planned as part of the development. The proximity to Wildern School and the leisure centre adds to the area's appeal for families. The architectural style is modern, with rendered facades, flat-roofed features and energy-efficient construction that contrast with the brick-and-tile styles of the earlier housing.
